Final Box of the Threesome-AKA Fuglly Box

2008 Donruss Extra Elite

The one box I wish I wouldn’t have picked up. The design is blah, and the colors even more blah. But the box did produce 5 autos, one college patch auto, some nice insert and die cut cards. The box was fun to open in spite of the blah.

Let us look at the Cardinals’ from the box. Shane Peterson, he was part of the three-player trade to the A’s for Matt Holliday. Not much of a MLB career so far and he was granted Free Agency after the 2016 season by the Brewers.
Niko Vasquez is currently in the Mexican League, and Sam Freeman who was traded in 2015 to the Rangers for Cash and player to be named later, then purchased from the Rangers b the Brewers, then granted Free Agency after the 2016 season and then signed by the Braves.

Autos (images borrowed-swear I am going to get a scanner, I swear)

Chris Hicks (Righty Pitcher) #101/719

Drafted by the Astros in 2008 MLB Amateur Draft. He must be out of baseball. I can’t find anything for him since 2012 when he was with the AAA OKC RedHawks  (Houston) of PCL.

Josh Roenicke (Righty Pitcher) #116/829

Son of former MLB Gary Roenicke and nephew of Ron Roenicker, and brother in law of Ian Desmond as he married Tan’s sister. Drafted by the Reds in 2006, but traded to the Jays along with EDWIN ENCARNACION (I bet the Reds wish they still had him), in exchange for former Redbird Scott Rolen.  After spending one season (2016) with the Angels he was granted free agency.

Clayton Cook  (Righty Pitcher) #326/844

Drafted by the Indians in the 2008 MLB Amateur Draft. The 2016 season saw him at the A+ level High Desert Mavericks (Rangers). It is very doubtful he will ever see the Bigs

Sean Ratliff (Lefty Pitcher) #193/544

Drafted out of Stanford U by the Mets in the 2008 MLB Amateur Draft.  Last stats available are for 2012 when he was with the St. Lucie Mets (A+)

Collegiate Patches (OK State) Jordy Mercer (Mid-infielder) auto #060/247

Drafted by the Pirates in 2008 Amateur Draft. Jordy has been rock solid for the Pirates with a career average over 5 seasons of .257.

Inserts

College Ties University of Miami Blake Tekotte/Mark Sobolewski #007/100

Blake a Missouri Native appears to be out of pro-baseball. For Mark he got as far as Sioux City AA (Ind) in 2014.

College Ties University of Texas Kenn Kasparek/Cat Osterman #437/1500

Kenn was last in baseball 2015 with the Norfolk Orioles AAA. Cat two-time USA Olympic Team player, currently coaching at Texas State Univeristy.

School Colors Jose Duran Texas A&M #666/1500

Last season with the Independent Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in 2009.

The School Colors inserts are really sharp and are one of the best inserts I have seen in a while, very attractive.

School Colors Brett Jacobson Vandy #0101/1500

Brett was last seen with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox PCL AAA affiliate of the Rockies. I went with some buddies several years ago to a Sky Sox game, good time.

Die-Cut

Aspirations Mark Cohoon #096/150

Mark was last seen with the Mets’ AA Binghamton Mets.

Blah box-probably because of the color and design. As my wife pointed out it is pretty depressing to see all of these young guys who don't make it to the bigs-but as I heard one commentator say, "the good ones have to play someone" in other words they do have to fill all of those Minor League teams.

I picked up a box of 2008  Upper Deck Goudey but it was bad, I mean two packs the consecutively gave  me 2 #ed mini J.J Putz's isn't worth commenting on! But there are more boxes coming.

  1. The design is pretty ugly, but then I think it's interesting to all of the collegiate uniforms that populate this product. An auto of a bonafide Major Leaguer also makes for a nice surprise. Not too bad.

  2. Thank you, the College unis do remind me that College is still the best feeder to the majors, and they get an education.
