Recent Redbird Signings Leave Me Feeling Blah

I haven't commented much on the Redbirds most recent signings of reliever Bret Cecil and possibly over the hill Dexter Fowler has left me feeling a little less than excited. I know the Cubs from all  their years of sucking have accumulated a lot of talent-but the Redbirds haven't sucked as long as the Cubs, thankfully-so it will be a bit more difficult for the Birds to get what they need from the how Draft Picks the Cubs have amassed. So when the Birds announced they signed Bret Cecil for the bullpen I thought to myself "here we go again"-Broxton, Duke, Choate, etc., etc. We shall see how that all works out.

Then low and behold the Cardinals drop some serious bank on a 30 year center fielder formally of the Rockies, Astros, Cubs (yuck), and now Cardinals. I think perhaps we get a couple of serviceable years out of him, but who knows. On the bright side I always, except when was a a Cub, enjoyed watching him play. I hope that he does well, he seems like a good guy with an infectious personality.

  1. As long as Matheny uses Cecil correctly, which I have my doubts, I like that signing. It was pricing, but look what closers are getting. Fowler was an overpay in my book. Too many years and I hate the no trade clause. But once again, the market set the price high. The Nationals gave up a ton for Eaton, and the Rockies gave Desmond a big contract. Blackmon was my favorite option, but that is just a dream now.

    1. I knew you bring back to reality as I tend to get pessimistic, Desmond is a bad signing but I could be wrong. I am with you on MM he hasn't proven that he can manage the pen.

  2. I like Fowler. He had some big hits for the Cubs last year. But damn... I think the Cardinals gave him way too much.
