COMC?

Hopefully I do not offend anyone but as I sit here recovering from Rotator Cuff surgery (hence more frequent posts) I am browsing vintage St. Louis Cardinals (Football) cards on COMC. I am struck by how, for the most part, over the top prices are. I know many readers sell on COMC and I have considered it myself so I recoup some of the money spent on cracking boxes etc. However, I rarely buy from them. I think I have-twice, once some cheap Redbird autos and another some odd ball cards including a few OPC. But for vintage there is no way I would shop on the site. Below are some examples of what I have found.

A raw NM/MT copy of Jim Hart 's 1968 Topps rookie card on COMC has a list price of $45.25. On the Bay a raw NM/MT  copy has a BIN price of $16.15 from a dealer that I have bought from.

Another example is a raw NM 1963 Topps #153 Jimmy Hill. On COMC this will set you back $30.25. On the Bay the below PSA 8 NM/MT copy is yours with a BIN price of $14.95.
Finally, a brief example from the '70s. A high number raw NM/MT 1972 Topps #327 Miller Farr on COMC will set you back $50.25. This PSA 9 copy has a BIN price of $47.99 on the Bay.
I am not trying to rip on COMC. When I ordered from them I received excellent service. From what I understand they offer better seller terms? I am interested on how others utilize COMC. What am I missing? What do others typically buy from COMC? I know many folks swear by them but I need a little more convincing and guidance.

  1. There are a couple sellers on there with insane prices, but most cards are very good on price. A few months back I got 236 cards for $200. Could have gotten more but I splurged on some rarities. Got back as old as 1905 too. They do let sellers choose prices to ask and some invariably are too high. Maybe it's a football seller who by coincidence put up all three cards you looked at?

    1. Sounds like you did pretty well. Could be the same seller

  2. The seller for all three cards is a third party who has some sort of arrangement with COMC; You may notice that the scans have a dark background and there's a footnote that says "Items stored remotely".

As Billy said, it's usually just a couple of sellers who have the ridiculous prices.

The other thing to keep in mind is that you can always make an offer. I believe some sellers use that as a strategy; price it high so there's room for negotiation.

  3. I have good luck finding deals on cheap autos/jerseys for my WVU collection. eBay is still king for my Pirates collection.

    1. I don't know what t is about COMC but their autos and game used are on the cheap side,at least from my experience. I picked about 20 autos for less than $100.

  5. I only buy from COMC twice a year unless a Lankford card pops up that I need. They always run a sale around Black Friday and Memorial Day. Buy 25 cards at any price and receive free shipping. A lot of sellers will discount their items during these sales. I also make offers on cards instead of buying at full price. Some dealers have an auto accept up to a certain percentage.

Sorry to hear about the surgery. You would fit right in with the rest of the Cardinals roster.

    1. I have been meaning to partake in the Black Friday sale. A couple of mall shows ago Fuji told COMC was there selling a ton of dime box cards but I didn't make it to his table.

Thank you, I wish I could say it was sports injury, but alas just a car accident
